Ironing boards weren’t invented until 1892, when Sarah Boone invented them. Even though households had been using flat surfaces to iron clothes for centuries, Boone’s invention improved the process by providing an adjustable board that could accommodate different sizes of clothes.

2. Traffic Light - Garrett Morgan

Garrett Morgan invented the automatic traffic signal in 1923. His invention was the first to automatically alternate the right-of-way between cars and to keep traffic moving smoothly and safely.

3. Gas Mask - Garrett Morgan

Garrett Morgan invented the gas mask in 1914. It was designed to protect users from dangerous gases by filtering the air they breathed.

4. Solar Water Heater - Elijah McCoy

Elijah McCoy invented the first practical solar water heater in 1892. Before McCoy’s invention, most homes used coal and wood-fired water heaters. McCoy’s invention used the sun’s energy to heat water and was much more efficient.
